BPS / KPO / BPO Careers
Over 5 million people work in Business Process Services in India. It is one of the most misunderstood career sectors — and one of the most accessible. Here is what it actually looks like from the inside.
Let us clear up the terminology first. BPO (Business Process Outsourcing), BPS (Business Process Services), and KPO (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) are often used interchangeably — but they describe different types of work.
BPO / BPS covers a wide range — from voice-based customer support to complex back-office operations in finance, HR, supply chain, and healthcare. The word "call centre" is an outdated and incomplete description of what this industry does today.
KPO is the knowledge-intensive end — legal process outsourcing, financial research, data analytics, market research, and clinical research. KPO roles typically require graduate or postgraduate qualifications and pay significantly more than traditional BPS.
The honest picture: BPS is not a fallback. It is a structured industry with clear entry points, defined growth paths, and salaries that are competitive with many other sectors for the same qualification level. The stigma around it is partly a perception problem — and partly the fact that not all companies within BPS are equal.
