Path 1 — Skill up, earn fast

Trades and training that pay within 6–24 months

These are structured, government-recognised routes — not dead-end jobs. Each one leads to a recognised certificate that employers across India (and abroad) understand.

Train inside a real company and get paid a monthly stipend while you learn. India's most underused opportunity.

Companies like Maruti, Tata Motors, L&T, and Indian Railways take thousands of apprentices every year. The stipend is modest, but you are being paid to become employable — the opposite of paying for a certificate.

Polytechnic Diploma

3-year engineering diploma after Class 10 (POLYCET in TS/AP)

A recognised engineering qualification 2 years faster than the 12th + B.Tech route. Junior engineer roles in govt and private sector.

Path 2 — Government jobs open at Class 10

Secure jobs you can apply for right now (or at 17–18)

These are permanent or long-term government positions where Class 10 is the qualifying education. Preparation can be done free with online materials — coaching is optional, not required.

RRB Level-1 posts — track maintainer, helper, assistant

India's largest employer. Permanent central government job with pension contributions, medical cover, and quarters.

SelectionComputer-based test (maths, reasoning, general science, current affairs) + physical efficiency test + medical.

GrowthDepartmental exams promote Group D staff to technician and supervisor grades. Many senior railway staff started at Level 1.

Agniveer (Army / Navy / Air Force)

Agnipath scheme — soldier entry, some trades at Class 10

4-year service with strong pay, then a ₹11.7 lakh exit fund — or selection into permanent cadre for the top 25%.

India Post GDS

Gramin Dak Sevak — branch postmaster, delivery agent

Selection is purely on Class 10 marks — no exam. One of the simplest government entries that exists.

Respected, permanent state government job. Requirements vary by state — TS/AP constable posts generally ask for Class 12, but several states and some categories accept Class 10.

Slower than full-time study — a part-time diploma can take 3.5–4 years. But it is paid for by your own earnings and costs your family nothing. That trade-off is worth naming with pride.

How to find itWhen applying anywhere, ask: "Does the company support further study or certification?" Organised employers (company-owned stores, factories, warehouses) are far more likely to say yes than informal ones.

Scholarships and schemes that reduce the pressure

Before deciding that further study is unaffordable, check these. Many families qualify without knowing.

National Scholarship Portal (NSP)

Central government scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/minority and low-income students — pre-matric and post-matric. One application covers many schemes. scholarships.gov.in ↗

TS / AP fee reimbursement

Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh reimburse tuition fees for eligible students (income-based) in polytechnic, ITI, and degree courses. Ask the college office directly — they process it.

Free hostels and stipends at govt ITIs

Many government ITIs offer free or subsidised hostels, and several states pay monthly stipends to ITI students from low-income families. Ask when you apply — it is rarely advertised.

Labour welfare board scholarships

If a parent is a registered construction or unorganised-sector worker, state labour welfare boards give education grants to their children. Registration is free at the local labour office.
